Chaos & Stampede During Ghana Military Recruitment Leads To Loss of Lives.

I was in the living room with my Mom when she switched on the TV to watch the mid-day news. I swiveled down the last dregs of my soda and focused my attention on the screen. That’s when I saw the headline news of 6 persons dying in a stampede at the El Wak Stadium. I couldn’t believe it! Earlier this morning I saw a video on X showing thousands of young Ghanaians queueing at the stadium as early as 2am awaiting the start of the recruitment process. I shook my head at the absurdity of it and went about my day only to finish a few meetings and see the tragic news on GBC. I am literally pained and so angry at the craziness of it all that I’m deeply tempted to write this post in CAPS. But I must reign in my anger. This isn’t an unfortunate event, it’s a national tragedy! It’s a disgraceful tragic horrific scandalous occurrence!

Why on earth does this country delight in chaos and frustrating the average Ghanaian? Why is our system set up to completely make us tear our hair out or be exasperated? I have only two questions:

  • question 1 is why was this being done at one location and if application forms had been submitted weren’t the people in charge aware of the numbers to break it up into smaller groups?

  • My other question is doesn’t the Ghana Army have an appointment system for recruitment? Like couldn’t they get a similar system used by the Passport Office to schedule a safe number of potential recruits for alloted days and times?

The chaos wasn’t only happening in Accra by the way. This same overcrowding and shoving and mass was apparently happening in Cape Coast and Kumasi stadiums! God have mercy!

Honestly this country is so DRAINING!!! Every single thing you want to get done will either sap your energy, sink your bank account or kill you! Whether you’re getting a birth certificate, primary school registeration, vaccination in a hospital, buying waakye, university forms, SHS registration, University forms, recruitment forms, death certificate… fɛɛ noko baa tao gbɛ ko nɔ ni egbe bo (something will find a way to kill you)

Google forms is free but people won’t use it for anything. Free form to fill and register some of you won’t even fill. So the people too sometimes are a f****** problem! This is how angry  i am! When will this madness of poor planning and organisation stop? How can corruption be eradicated when this is the system we have created for ourselves?

The Ghana Armed Forces released a press statement earlier this afternoon and everyone’s reaction is literally on the same tangent! How did you not expect these numbers after receiving the application forms? A surge is bound to happen and always happens every year! Apparently this year’s number of potential recruits exceeded ten thousand people!

Press Release Statement by Ghana Armed Forces

How difficult is it to have website for recruitment? Look at this scenario: Applicants fill a form with their details, choose a date and time , show up on that selected session for their physicals and go home and await the news of rejection or acceptance. Voila! And anyone who shows up at a time they shouldn’t, you sack them with cane! Stubborn academy folks deserve that.

What pains me is that, a family somewhere said goodbye to their unemployed young adult this morning but will get the news this afternoon that they’re dead! Like our leaders???!! This is simply unbecoming of us.

Ghana paaa!! Are we going backwards or forwards in 2025? Other countries are leading with robotics and super technological advances meanwhile we are here dying from trying to survive and throwing stones at passenger trains😭😆😆😆😅😩😭. WTFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update: According to President Mahama who was informed of the incident during the launch of Nkoko Nkitinkiti the victims of the recruitment were 6 young females.

May their families be comforted and strengthened in this extremely difficult time. 💔
