5 Tips For eye health & maintaining a good eyesight.

5 Tips For eye health & maintaining a good eyesight.

It's easy to forget to give our eyes a checkup but our eyes deserves the absolute best care as they work harder than any other organ. Just think of how many times it has to blink in a minute 😅.

As today is #WorldSightDay2022 , here are 5 tips i gleaned off a Spaces chat BloggingGhana organized with host Roberts & Sons opticians.

  1. Eat Well

Healthy foods like spinach, carrots , nkontonmire, carrots, brightly colored bell peppers, tuna are extremely rich in vitamins and minerals that your body needs for good eye health. Take carrots for example which contains betacarotene which the body converts into vitamin A (retinol). The human body thrives on vitamin A for good vision eye health so include these vegetables and meat products in your diet as much as possible.

2. Keep To The 20-20-20 rule

More and more people are staying longer on screens. Screen time on mobile has increased so sharply that technology giants like Apple have been forced to introduce Screentime features . Prolonged screen time leads to eye strain and headaches . The 20-20-20rule means for every 20minutes spent on the screen, look 20ft away for 20 seconds. Take a break, look outside your window and focus on an object far off. This action helps your eye muscles to relax .

3 . Reduce your children's screen time

Our children have been born into a digital age and as a parent you and I need to manage their screen time use. Use a timer which logs them out of the screen , reduce screen brightness and encourage play time offline. Neck aches, trouble concentrating, eye strain and itchy eyes are some symptoms a child can get with prolonged screen exposure. Eventually, a child might need to wear glasses from an early age.

4. Schedule An Optometrist Visit.

Set a reminder for an annual eye checkup at your Optometrist just to make sure everything is okay with your peepers👀. It's better to be well informed than to wait last minute when an eye condition gets worse.

5. Wear sunglasses

We live in a tropical country where the sun's temperature can reach as high as 27 degrees Celsius. Ultraviolet rays from the sun are harmful to the eyes but sunglasses with a UV filter can protect your eyes from these rays. Regular UV exposure increases your chances of cataracts so do the needful and get those sunglasses.

Your eyes are precious and taking good care of them requires regular eye exams for you and your children. Eye exams can reveal early stage glaucoma which will prevent blindness.
