President John Dramani Mahama Presides Over The Commissioning of Ghana’s First Pasta Factory by Olam Agri: A New Era for Local Food Processing.

Olam Agri a global agri-food company, commissioned a $40million state-of-the-art pasta factory on the 10th of March, 2026. The pasta manufacturing factory which is located in Tema, is projected to deepen domestic production, enhance food security and accelerate industrial growth according to the food processing giant.

His Excellency John Mahama presided over the commissioning with Olam Group Co-Founder and CEO, Sunny Verghese, senior government officials, traditional leaders, industry stakeholders and development partners.

According to the press release posted on the Olam Agri website, the President commented on how such investments help to stabilise supply and prices, and support the development of technical skills within the manufacturing sector. He further described the plant as one of the ‘tangible benefits’ resulting from ongoing agro industrial investments under the agriculture for economic transformation agenda.

Beyond just making pasta, the factory is poised to have a big impact on the whole food industry. It’s likely to boost demand for wheat alternatives, as well as packaging, shipping, and places to sell the pasta. Plus, it’s a fantastic chance for chefs, restaurants, caterers, and food business owners to try out pasta made right here in Ghana, which could spark some new recipe ideas in the country’s ever-changing food scene.

Believe it or not pasta in spagetti or macroni form is highly consumed in most Ghanaian homes and prepared as a side dish with local streetfoods such as rice, waakye and jollof. In 2024, Ghana imported $82.2M of pasta which is evident of the high demand on the market and is actually costing us alot as a nation. Recently, the Finance Minister Ato Forson banned land imports of vegetable oil, flour, frozen products, pasta, etc to protect investors in the food industry and also to safeguard revenues on these products,

Olam Agri currently is already a major producer of quality wheat flour in the country’s largest state-of-the-art wheat mill in Tema with the First Choice and Royal Gold brands thus this forward integration into pasta production makes good business sense. The premium pasta products will be hitting the Ghanaian markets this March.
