Top 5 Bookshops To Discover In Accra & Tema.

Booklovers rejoice! Are you lookng for bookshops for your next book haul? Well, these A-List bookshops will satisfy your book craving as you can find a dizzying selection of literary genres from thrillers, african authors, romance, horror, supernatural, kids books and so on!

Last year’s Books & Bites event brought together various booksellers and it gives me much pleasure to share some of them with you! These bookshops are brick & mortar independent shops whilst others are online only bookshops with delivery services.

  1. Vidya Bookstore

Possibly the number one bookstore in Accra, Vidya has locations at Osu and Labone and is packed high and low with a variety of books spanning from cookbooks, bestseller novels, autobiographies, self-help books to children books. It’s calming and clean ambiance sometimes makes me wish for a nook. Even when I don’t plan on buying a book, I casually stop by to feed my eyes on their collections. They have been around for years and are definitely a trustworthy book shop. Find them on Instagram @vidyabookstore .

2. Challenge Bookshop

If you are motivational and spiritual books nerd then this decades old Christian bookshop will satisfy your book cravings. Challenge bookshop has been around forever and used to be my personal plug for Our Daily Bread devotionals or grabbing the latest Stormie Omartian book. It’s really easy to find books by Christian authors, Bibles or biographies of past and recent Ghanaian leaders at their Kokomlemle branch. Happy reading!

3. BookNook Store

Love African literature? Have you been searching for limited editions of books written by the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah ? BookNook has it. What a treasure trove of memoirs, Ghanaian and African books! BookNook is an online book store with a wonderful website where you can make your purchase and delivery will be made straight to you anywhere within Ghana and the world! If you also just launched your latest book, congratulations! But also make sure to add BookNook as a trusted platform to sell your books!

4. The WordPlayce

This bookshop is in the heart of Tema, Community 12 and it’s not only a bookshop but they organise reading clubs for adults and children! Reading clubs play a vital role in fostering a sense of community among book enthusiasts by providing a platform for meaningful discussions and interactions. The children also benefit from reading clubs as it enhances their reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking skills, whilst fostering a lifelong love for learning and literature. If you love African romance novels, trust that you’ll find a generous number of them here. They have walk-in and delivery services also available. Check out their lovely Instagram page for more details: @thewordplayce

5. Rhogail bookstore

Do not be deceived by its size. Once you step into this store located in Osu, you’ll be amazed by the wild display of book genres for all ages! Each shelving space is packed with novels, cookbooks, journals, children’s books, motivational books, even a few card games! Books are seriously piled high to the ceiling! It’s not ideal if you want to sit and read for lack of space. Their instagram however shares all available books and they are quite responsive as well. Delivery services are also available. Find them on Google maps also.

There are many more bookstores in the city with majority being online only. But also be mindful of scams where you’ll pay for a book and never get it. I have encountered one such store before and never again.

Here are a few tips on how to make reading a habit in case you made it a resolution for 2024.

  1. Set aside dedicated time each day to engage with a book or article that piques your interest.

  2. Create a cozy reading nook in your home where you can unwind and immerse yourself in other literary worlds without distractions. Get a lamp nearby, make your favourite cup of tea or coffee and this ritual will get you looking forward to reading.

  3. Join a Book Club: Engaging with a community of readers can motivate you to read regularly. Book clubs provide a platform for discussions, recommendations, and sharing your thoughts on the books you've read. Contact WordPlayce listed up to join in theirs or also reach out to BookWormInGh to join a rich community of african women romance readers.

  4. Set Realistic Goals: Start with achievable reading goal such as finishing one book per month. As you build your reading stamina, you can gradually increase the number of books or pages you aim to read. Don’t be pressured by bookstagram reels or booktok which shows videos of people reading 10 books in a month! Go at your own pace. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way to stay motivated.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can cultivate a healthy reading habit that brings you inner joy, deepens your knowledge, and ushers relaxation into your daily life.
