Highlights From The Embassy of Morocco’s 26th Throne Day Celebration in Ghana.
The Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco hosted a vibrant reception at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra to mark Throne Day, an annual national celebration that honours the accession of King Mohammed VI to the throne. The formal event brought together diplomats, government officials, traditional rulers and social media influencers to commemorate this very important day in Moroccan history.
Personally, I left home quite early knowing how 5pm traffic in that area usually looked like and arrived just a little before 6pm. The ballroom booked for the night’s event was vast and vacant save for a few Morrocan staff. I love being on time! Soon guests started arriving and were welcomed by traditonal drummers & Adowa dancers whilst the host, H.E Imane Ouadil and her husband took up positions at the door entrance to welcome invited guests. People from the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious rulers, media personalities and social media influencers engaged and connected over refreshing fruit sips.
The Moroccan Ambassador then read a speech which included highlighting diplomatic works and agreements between the two countries over the years and recent events such as the waiving of visa fees for Ghanaian travellers to Morroco and a donation of 2000 tons of fertilizer to Dep. Minister of Agriculture Honourable John Dumelo in support of local farmers. She also revealed that the Ghanaian government together with the Moroccan Embassy are working assidiously at making Ghana a visa-free country for Morrocan travellers. Morocco and Ghana share a deepening relationship grounded in mutual respect and regional cooperation. From scholarship programs for Ghanaian students in Moroccan universities to joint ventures in agriculture and renewable energy, the two nations continue to explore meaningful partnerships that reflect the spirit of pan-African unity.
The government official who stood in for the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Sam Ablakwa was Sports Minister Hon. Kofi Adams. He used the opportunity to congratulate His Majesty King Mohammed VI on behalf of President Mahama and the people of Ghana whilst also chipping in a hearty congratulations to the Black Queens who won bronze at the very recently held WAFCON 2025 in Morocco. The commemoration he said is an opportunity to reflect on the friendship and cooperation which exists between the two countries.
The rest of the evening was the opportunity to network and dine on authentic Moroccan dishes. My word! What a spread it was! Chicken Tagine covered in preserved lemons and chermoula sauce to succulent lamb cuts generously coated in preserved plum, juicy apricots and crunchy roasted almonds, curry couscous topped with slow-cooked vegetables and seafood tagine! I am not sure if anyone was watching me but I piled on that plate and devoured it to no end!
Then I discovered the Maghrebi tea setup! What detail and skill! The craftmanship displayed on those teapots alone! One sip of the tea was like a warm wash of delight over my being! I could literally feel my skin flush! I must have had two cups of that tea (was that even polite?) The desserts were moulded with care and detail!
One bite into a richmond cookie caused it to explode into tiny coconut shreds in my mouth and the Ghriba was chewy and almondy. In all every meal was a 10/10! Truly delightful!
The evening was more than just a diplomatic occasion — it was a celebration of shared values, unity, and African identity. As Moroccan music filled the air and guests mingled over mint tea and sablé, the spirit of collaboration between the two nations was tangible and inspiring to see.
